his earliest musical memories are of a duet with his brother of al jolson's when the red, red robin comes bob bob bobbin' along, probably his first ever public performance, and of annual charity christmas carol singing in aid of the national children's home, in the local octagon shopping centre as well as the slightly more prestigious king's mall shopping centre in shepherd's bush, near his father's physicist day-job office. education on starting secondary school at rgs high wycombe he took up the oboe, and it was on beginning gcse music that he first discovered an interest in composition. the school jazz band was a major force in this stage of his life, his desire to join being the main motivation for a renewed interest in piano practice. he worked through the abrsm grade system, reaching grade 8 on piano and oboe by age 17, but was entirely self-taught in jazz and improvisation, achieving his dream of joining jazz band as pianist in the 6th form. on the classical side, an organ scholarship enabled him to pursue lessons with an ex-queens college cambridge organ scholar. his decision to pursue music at university was difficult, as his physics teachers were also very persuasive, but there was so much going on in his musical life that music was the more obvious choice. following a very brief experience at oxford university, he followed his girlfriend (later, wife!) to the west country, studying music at bristol. alongside the mainly classical course he pursued his own interests of jazz and technology, paying his way with jazz gigs, sound engineering and recording. career another big moment of decision came at the end of his degree course – he was offered a “work-your-way-up from tea-boy” job at a radio station, but his tutor recommended that all musicians should get a teaching qualification. as he had always looked up to his music teachers, who always had so much else going on alongside their teaching, alan decided that this was his next move. whilst pursuing his pgce teaching qualification in oxford, he worked as a ballet repetiteur and took on the role of organist at st michael & all angels, beaconsfield, later adding the role of choirmaster. on graduation he began teaching part-time alongside his performing work, but was head-hunted by his alma mater, the royal grammar school, high wycombe, and took on the full-time position of assistant director of music, with particular responsibility for the jazz bands and music technology, which also led him to act as a consultant to other top grammar schools in the area. a lifelong learner, alan was keen to keep up his own education: at the guildhall school of music and drama, jazz legend scott stroman selected him as pianist of the big band, based on his sight-reading and improvisation skills;
